If you’re searching “horseback riding near me” and you’ve never ridden before — that’s perfectly fine. The vast majority of students at Miguel Alves Horses start from zero.

Here’s what a first lesson looks like:

  2. Mounting — with instructor support; the horse is stationary
  3. Walk — in the arena, learning to steer and stop
  4. Basic trot (if comfortable) — instructor guides pace

You don’t need to bring any equipment. We provide certified helmets and body protectors at no charge.

What to wear: comfortable trousers (not stiff jeans), closed-toe shoes with a flat sole.

Is There Horseback Riding in Lisbon Itself?

The city of Lisbon proper has limited equestrian options — the terrain and urban density make it impractical. The real riding is on the Cascais coast, a short drive west. Think of it as the equestrian equivalent of the Algarve for golf: the infrastructure and landscape are simply better outside the city.

The A5 motorway makes it straightforward: from Lisbon’s Marquês de Pombal junction to Quinta da Marinha is under 30 minutes without traffic.
